Legal Reasoning From First Principles: What Actually Makes an Argument Valid

The two-move framework

Almost every legal reasoning question — CLAT, AILET, LSAT — reduces to a rule (either given in the passage or derived from a principle) and a fact set. Your job is to figure out whether the facts satisfy the rule's conditions.

A worked example

Suppose the principle is: 'A contract requires offer, acceptance, and consideration. Acceptance must be communicated to the offeror to be valid.'

Rule extraction gives you: If (offer) AND (acceptance communicated) AND (consideration) → contract exists.

Now watch what happens with the facts: 'A offered a car to B for ₹5 lakh. B told his friend he accepted. A never heard from B.' Fact-map: offer ✓, consideration ✓, acceptance communicated ✗. Result: no contract.

Do I need to memorise case law for CLAT legal reasoning?
No. CLAT gives you the principle in the passage itself. Memorising case law is a distraction. AILET occasionally rewards it, but even there, principle-fact mapping wins.
How long should rule extraction take?
20 seconds max. If it takes longer, you're overthinking. Write it in the margin in one sentence and move to fact-mapping.
